The Mission

To foster harmony between the urban and natural landscapes that compose the Urban-Wildland Interface. To protect, restore and sustainably manage the unique natural resources and open spaces in the face of the variety of environmental risks inherent to the landscapes of Southern California: Wildfires, Erosion, and the degradation of natural resources which result from development activities.

Philosophy

Birdman Canyon, the namesake of our organization, is an actual place. It is one of many natural landscapes, a part of the network of rolling hills, canyons and arroyos that compose the wild open spaces of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. We believe that these landscapes define us, shape us and imprint us with our sense of purpose; that we are an integral part of the ecosystem.

In the home garden we seek to create a site appropriate, diverse, and harmonious ecosystem, inspired by actual wild natural landscapes. We design and construct a dynamic living sculpture, that demonstrates the diversity and wonder of each ecosystem we bring home, whether it is an exclusively local California Native plant communities, or also incorporating some other unique, mediterranean-climate adapted wonders.
